Waste generated during the processing and consumption of the food is a global problem that negatively impacts on the environment, the social status and the economy. For sustainable global development, it is very important to manage biowaste from the perspective of a circular economy. The application of the refinery concept is significant, utilizing the biowaste to produce high value-added bioproducts, such as biochemicals and biofuels. According to the differences in the characteristics of the compounds in biowaste types, it canbe valorized by applying extraction of biologically active components, thermochemical and biochemical
conversion techniques to obtain biofuels and energy. The obtained bioproducts are
used in the food industry, pharmaceutical industry, cosmetics, in the processes of synthesis, as well as, in the processes of wastewater treatment obtained from different types of industry.
This report presents the benefits of the workshops conducted in Tetovo, Skopje and Strumica in order to acquaint food processors, retail food sector and consumers with the possibilities of applying the circular economy and the valorization processes of the biowaste for obtaining bioproducts at the national level.
