The purpose of this study is to provide verified information about the current situation in the construction sector in N. Macedonia in relation to trends for introduction of energy efficiency and retrofitting technologies and the respective skillsets.
The focus of the report is to highlight the current sector trends and map the key initiatives that will drive the transformation of the construction sector in the future, by introduction of new technologies and approached specifically those related to the green transition. The report provides relevant statistical data of the construction sector mainly pertinent to the share of the construction sector in the national economy, companies and services offered in the sector, as well information on the educational institutions who are competent for providing new workforce in the construction sector (engineers and blue-collar workers).
To understand the needs for future skills and job profiles in the energy efficiency and retrofitting, this report presents and explains the relevant European, regional and national strategies, laws and projects. Energy trends nowadays are emphasizing more ambitious transition towards low-carbon economy, with renewable energy sources, energy efficiency and greenhouse gas emissions among the most important enablers of transition. North Macedonia firmly follows the EU policies and strategies, and in accordance develops and implements strategies and national plans. The conclusion is that the goals set in these documents imply the necessity for rapid, systematic and continuous progress in the educational offer and reskilling and upskilling the workers in the construction sector.
Consequently, the report focus is on the potential career pathways that workers can have in the construction sector specifically related to those in the realm of application of energy efficiency and retrofit technologies. This section of the report also provides overview about the different roles and skills needed for the various professions, and the respective various phases in the construction process. The analyzed career pathways are specifically in the area of Design and Design for Retrofitting, Building and Retrofitting, and Maintenance of Buildings.
